Forestry & land use
DEPI manages areas of Crown land that include parks and reserves, State forests, waterways, coasts and marine environments. These areas are managed for conservation, tourism, recreation, and primary industries (i.e. timber, water, apiary, grazing, firewood, etc.) and play an important role in the stability of economic, social and environmental wellbeing. Management of these areas is done by DEPI regions and partner organisations that include Parks Victoria, VicForests, water authorities, committees of management and boards. These arrangements are designed to deliver local, on-ground outcomes that are based on community being involved in decision-making.
To support DEPI's management responsibilities requires access to spatial information. This information includes imagery collected through Coordinated Imagery Program and the Vicmap products. The use of this spatial information is supported through the Vicmap Bulletins and Newtech Conferences.
DEPI's responsibilities also extend to the implementation of Victorian government policies, legislation, and monitoring to protect our environment and natural resources while boosting the productivity in Victoria's world-class food, fibre and tourism sectors.
