Crown land leases, licenses and permits
Leasing of Crown land in Victoria
A lease grants an exclusive right to occupy a defined area of land. The Leasing Policy for Crown land in Victoria establishes overarching leasing principles around public benefit, consistency and transparency in process along with ecological sustainability to guide land managers, existing tenants and prospective tenants when making decisions about leasing.
The Crown land leasing guidelines provide information about the main statutory requirements needed to grant a lease under the Crown Land (Reserves) Act 1978, Land Act 1958 and Forests Act 1958 along with links to other relevant legislation.
All inquiries to lease Crown land should be made at your local DEPI office. For DEPI managed land, available for lease, an application form will need to be complete and assessed by DEPI. Where another body (i.e. committee of management) managers the Crown land any proposed lease needs have its support before DEPI will consider the lease.
