National parks : Tourism investment
Victorians are extremely fortunate to have so many beautiful national parks and other public land on our doorstep. These unique places provide enormous social, cultural and economic benefits and memorable experiences to those who visit them.
In March 2013, the Minister for Environment and Climate Change released the Tourism Investment Opportunities of Significance in National Parks Guidelines. The minister has now released the Tourism investment opportunities of significance in national parks making a proposal package, which is an information pack to guide potential investors through the process of gaining important approvals and taking their plans to fruition. The guidelines and the proposal package outline the process the minister will follow when considering tourism investment proposals in national parks.
The proposal package supports the guidelines and assists potential investors who are interested in developing tourism opportunities of significance in Victoria’s national parks. It applies to proponent initiated projects and outlines the requirements and approvals process for these projects.
A range of proposals will be considered depending on the site, scale of the proposal and whether the requirements of the legislation and the principles and criteria set out in the guidelines can be met.
All proposals will need to be both sensible and sensitive to the surrounding park, and will require a comprehensive assessment of potential impacts to ensure they are compatible with park values. New investment proposals will be considered that meet the objectives and principles of the guidelines, complement and enhance the values of the park and contribute to the regional economy.
In addition, a transparent approvals process will apply, including a public consultation phase.
